Painful Ties

Painful Ties is an intimate, character-driven drama centered on Derek Odom, a young man whose anger and increasingly destructive behavior have begun creating serious problems at school and in the relationships around him.

After his actions lead to a court-mandated therapy session, Derek finds himself sitting across from therapist Christopher Redman. He enters the room guarded, frustrated, and determined not to participate any more than necessary. To Derek, the session is simply another consequence being forced on him by people who do not understand what he is dealing with.

Christopher, however, refuses to remain on the surface. As he challenges Derek to examine the anger behind his behavior, the conversation gradually shifts toward the pain Derek has spent years avoiding. His struggles at school and his conflicts with others begin to reveal something deeper: unresolved feelings of abandonment, resentment, and the emotional impact of growing up without his father.

As Derek reluctantly opens up, the boundaries of what initially feels like a routine therapy session begin to change. Certain questions seem unusually personal. Certain reactions carry unexpected weight. And as the conversation becomes more vulnerable, Christopher finds himself increasingly affected by what Derek reveals.

The session ultimately becomes more than an attempt to correct Derek’s behavior. It becomes a confrontation with the pain that has shaped him, the questions he has never been able to answer, and the possibility that understanding his past may be the only way to change his future.
